On Thursday, October 19th at the Consulate General of Greece in Toronto a joint venture organized by the Greek Consulate General Office of Toronto, Eurobank and the Hellenic Canadian Chamber of Commerce in an effort to promote the business beyond borders initiative between Canada and Greece was presented. Consul General Alexandros Ioannidis proudly opened the event welcoming all presenters and attendees and emphasized the importance in sharing of information of accessible tools and current international agreements for import/export opportunities of a large variety of Greek goods; a significant contribution in the effort to re-establish economic growth for Greece and overcoming the economic crisis of recent years.
From Greece, senior management delegates from Eurobank included the General Manager Mr. Konstantinos Vassiliou, Mr. Michalis Tsarbopoulos – Assistant General Manager, Head of Global Transaction Banking, and Mr. Eleftherios Vlachogiannis -Head of Cash & Trade Services, Global Transaction Banking. Mr. Vassiliou briefly discussed Eurobank’s strong banking profile as one of Greece’s 4 main banks and – along with 138 European banks, is directly regulated by the European Central Bank with branches throughout Europe. Eurobank continues to organize ‘thematic’ product trade events held in Greece such as ‘Go in Athens’ and ‘Go in Crete’ where such business meeting programs enable Greek exporters to introduce their products to selective buyers from countries around the world with the goal of establishing trade agreements with the export of Greek products.
Mr. Michalis Tsarbopoulos introduced EXPORTGATE.GR – the digital portal designed to best facilitate the user in effective and up-to-date research information on international trade and business networking resources available through the use of this online tool. In addition, the user is able to view and connect with registered Greek exporters and international buyers. This initiative was created in 2009 and developed by Eurobank under the aegis of the Ministry of Economy and Development and in cooperation with the main export agencies of Greece (Panhellenic Association of Exporters, Federation of Enterprises and Industries, Association of Exporters of Northern Greece and the Exporters’ Association of Crete)*. EXPORTGATE.GR consists of two main components; the first being the area of knowledge and information provided on current market needs and supply. While the second component includes networking whereby users are able to connect with clients to initialize and establish potential business relationships. This access to information is free and available to all. To date outside of Greece over 110 countries with over 1.2 million users have accessed exportgate.gr for information on learning more about Greek exporting opportunities. Mr. Tsarbopoulos also introduced the Trade Bank Alliance Network – the 1st Global Digital Business Interconnection – which Eurobank is one of the founding members of and is now supported by 7 banking groups in 22 countries.
Mr. Vlachogiannis then continued the presentation with a visual presentation of EXPORTGATE.GR showing how one would navigate the site’s wealth of information. One is able to first access the portal’s resources and then if one wishes to they are able to register their business by connecting with the ‘club’ network. The selection process then takes place to ensure that all registered businesses are creditable and provide quality Greek goods/products that would become available to interested investors.
Following the thorough presentation by the Eurobank delegates, Mrs. Areti Skafidaki representing the office of the Ministry of Economy & Development of Greece provided information on the recent Comprehensive Economic & Trade Agreement (CETA) between Canada and the European Union along with its’ member countries. Provisionally effective as of Sept. 21, 2017 Canada and the EU have partially enforced the extensive benefits to the import/export of goods between Canada and EU countries. Some benefits to note are the additional reduction of tariffs on imported goods to the eventual phasing out of tariffs over a period of time, as well as procedures at customs to be clearer and more efficient so that products are both less costly and more readily available in the market. The CETA agreement applies not only to a large number and variety of goods but also includes the providing of professional services and the recognition of European skilled professionals seeking to work in Canada and similarly for certain skilled Canadians to temporarily work in EU countries. This historic trade agreement between Canada and the EU opens and welcomes great trade, services and skilled professional opportunities for both Canadians and Europeans.
In closing, the importance of both efficient accessibility to reliable and professional resources as are available through Eurobank’s EXPORTGATE.GR in addition to the financial support and expertise of its’ banking professionals along with, the recent CETA opportunities between Canada and EU clearly allow greater opportunities of success for Greek investment and entrepreneurship.
