The Greek Consulate held a splendid event in the Estia of The Hellenic Home for the Aged on Winona Avenue. Mezzo soprano Ariana Chris accompanied by pianist Peter Tiefenbach sang Christmas carols, Greek tangos and opera arias for the residents and staff of the Home. The Hellenic Home’s choir led by the inimitable Irene Stumbos also participated with Greek Christmas carols.
The concert, a first of its kind, was organized by Consul General Victor Maligoudis and the staff of the consulate.
Miss Chris opened the program the Habanera from Bizet’s Carmen. The aria states the (that) “love is a rebellious bird” and expresses the gypsy woman’s freedom and defiance in love as in life. Ms Chris then sang “Je suis ici” from Massenet’s Cendrillon, in which the poor Cinderella expresses her utter distress and fear as she runs away from the Prince at the stroke of midnight and loses one of her slippers. Ms Chris sang with her usual singular expressiveness.
The program followed with two Greek tangos, “Hronia se Perimena” and “Liges Kardies Agapoune”
They were followed by Christmas carols, “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas” and “The Little Drummer Boy,” The Choir and the audience joined in with “Silent Night,” “Κάλαντα” and more joyous singing.
The hall was full, the audience highly receptive and the concert captured the Christmas spirit and all expressed their gratitude to Ms Chris and Mr. Tiefenbach as well as to Ms. Stumbos and the Choir for their performance.
Kudos to Mr. Maligoudis and his staff for putting the marvelous event together.
