Hellenic tradition of cutting Vasilopita across Canada

By Athina Taggidou

January…new year, new beginnings and the Greek tradition of the cutting of the Vasilopita
is celebrated amongst Greeks throughout the world.
Vasilopita is a special cake dedicated to St.
Vasilios whose feast/name day is celebrated on January 1st. And, in each Vasilopita is a lucky coin which is said to bring good fortune to the lucky one who is given the piece of cake which has the coin. Here
in Canada some of the more distant communities
sharing their Vasilopita 2018 celebrations with
us are from Edmonton , Alberta the Hellenic-
Canadian Community of Edmonton and Region’s
Greek Language School of the Edmonton Hellenic
Community. And, from Windsor, Ontario the Platon
Academy Greek School of the Greek Orthodox
Community of Windsor..
