In 2019, Hellenic Heritage Month was officially recognized by the Ontario Legislature.
I was proud to see the Bill I introduced to establish this recognition adopted and passed into law by the PC Government under Premier Nation.
Hellenic Heritage Month will be celebrated each year in March to coincide with March 25th, the date Greece declared its independence.
This year is even more significant as March 25, 2021 is the Bicentennial of Greece’s independence.
The people of Greece and those of Hellenic descent in Ontario and around the world – and all the philhellenes who support them – are joined in marking this important anniversary.
It’s 200 years since Greece, the mother of democracy, rose up to restore her freedom after 400 years of Ottoman rule.
In honour of Hellenic Heritage Month and this important anniversary, I will be profiling exceptional Canadians of Hellenic descent who have made a significant contribution to our nation and made us proud.
This week we recognize Teresa Stratas, renowned operatic soprano Senator Leo Housakos Labi Kousoulis Demetrios Nicolaides Christina Mitas Peter Fragiskatos Emmanuella Lambropoulos Niki Ashton Annie Koutrakis Greece in Canada Victor Maligoudis and Hellenic Heritage Foundation
