Here are the key milestones of the Hellenic Home :
Our History
1974 The Hellenic Home for the Aged was incorporated. 1986 Phase I was built which consisted of 150 independent living seniors’ apartments and a gathering area, the Estia, for the tenants and the community. 1994 The Hellenic Home opened its Phase II facility consisting of 82 long-term care beds. Seventy-five additional independent living seniors’ apartments were also built. 1995 The St. Anargyroi Greek Orthodox Chapel was built to fulfill the spiritual needs of our seniors residing in the apartments and in the long-term care facility. The Hellenic Home addressed their evolving healthcare needs of our seniors residing in the independent living apartments by implementing the Supportive Housing Department. 2004 Hellenic Home opened our new 128-bed Long-Term Care facility in Scarborough. 2007 The Adult Day Program located at the Toronto site was opened to provide social, recreational and therapeutic service for older adults with physical frailty and/or cognitive impairment along with respite services to their caregivers. 2010 The Hellenic Home reached a new milestone in providing for the spiritual needs of our seniors and enhancing their quality of life – the completion of the Saints Kyrillos and Methodios Chapel at our Scarborough Long-Term Care facility.

Assistance and therapeutic interventions are designed tosupport the person by compensating for their physical or cognitive limitation.
We also offer spiritualservices to our residents in two chapels and we employ two priests. We pay thefull salary of the priests and maintain the chapels. We receive no subsidy for these services.
Who gets hosted and how areelderly taken care of?
Usually the residents of the Hellenic Care ( Nursing Home ) areseniors or young adults that cannot take care themselves and need twenty fourhours care.
The tenants in our Housing complex are over 55 years old and theyhave to be Greeks or from Greek decent. It is independent living but we canprovide some services if they need them.
How is tenants? responseto all of this?
We conduct satisfaction surveys and the rating are top notch. Theapplication numbers speak to it. We have over 400 applicants waiting fora bed in the Nursing Home and over 150 applicants for the Senior Housing.6
What arethe ways to helpout and to what level is your volunteer support?
We have currently over 200 volunteers that are graciously offeringtheir time for our seniors. They can help the seniors moving then around, entertain, talk to them, feed them (once we train them). Some they volunteertheir time in committees for our fund raising events ie walkathon, Golf,Gala etc
Is rentsufficient to cover expenses or are you in need of donations too?
We have donations but they are not significant. The Governmentpays a portion of the expenses, and the fees that we charge for the residentsand tenants. If we don’t do the fund raising activities we will not be able tomeet our financial obligations.
Describeto us the building extension you are suggesting and timelines of the project.
We have been lobbying the Ministry for the past two years in orderto secure the licence to build because we are an aging population and the listof applicants is increasing every day. The cost of this project it isestimated to be $27-30 million dollars. We are expected to raise about $5-6million dollars plus our savings of approximately $ 2 million dollars andthe rest will bank financing. The Ministry of Health will help us to pay ourMortgage over a 20 year period by contributing appr. $17 dollars per dayper resident .
we have to come up with the difference.
What is the message you want people to have for care of theelderly?
There is a big need of ourservices in our Greek Community. People living longer and we see more andmore complicated cases. The families cannot provide for their elderly. Theyneed our services and the number of applicants are increasing every day.
We need our community tosupport us in meeting our needs.
