Ontario's largest school board says nearly one-third of elementary school students and 22 per cent of high school students will learn from home in the upcoming school year during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Toronto District School Board collected the data as part of a registration survey that drew a response from 89 per cent of parents or guardians.

Seventy per cent of parents or guardians of elementary-age students indicated they would send their children for in-school learning, while the rest indicated children will learn at home.

Seventy-eight per cent of parents or guardians said their high school students will be learning in-class.

The TDSB had earlier said it needed a clearer picture of how many students will return to in-person studies to better prepare for a safe start to the school year.

The board is set to begin school on Sept. 15, with a three-day staggered start for elementary students.
